What is a timeless collectible Christmas ornament?

My husband and I collect Department 56 "North Pole" houses and we'd like to start a collection for our daughter that we can p down to her. Because storing a collection takes space, I was thinking ornaments. I don't want to collect Department 56 ornaments and was trying to think of a collection that would be just as nice. Any suggestions?
